In
most cases, a spouse is caught off-guard when the other person
suddenly lays down divorce papers—leading to profound confusion and
the question, “Why didn’t I see this coming?” Taking the status
quo for granted is one big mistake couples make, as the various signs
of a failing marriage tend to be overlooked.
Living
in silence– If
you spend a lot of hours at home, at a party, or some other social
function and you rarely have a meaningful conversation, it’s a sign
of a marital rift. According to marriage expert Elayne Savage, PhD.,
this situation is also known as “uncoupling” or being ultimately
disconnected from each other. This is also evident if one person
tends to spend more time with friends, family, or hobbies rather than
the spouse.
Nothing
you do is right– You
try to cook dinner, then your beau comes in, takes a sip, and
criticizes it. Or you might be looking at some important documents,
then you get yelled at for it because the documents are “private.”
A constant stream of judgment from the partner is another sign of a
failing marriage, wherein the spouse seems only to notice the
partner’s mistakes.
You
think about cheating– Infidelity
is probably the biggest reason why couples call it quits, and for
good reason. Having affairs outside the marriage result in nothing
but trouble—lies, deceit, guilt, shame, and other emotions shape
often lead to a trip to a divorce attorney’s doorstep.
